Hi Geoff,
My fathers name was Jack Johnson and was a Wireless Operator. He died back in 1996. He initially flew Wellingtons with the Squadron and then converted to Liberators. His pilot for these Wellington missions was Jim Ross, a New Zealander. His pilot for most of his time in Liberators was Eddie Gilbert, a Canadian.
I wonder if your dad can remember him.?
Good to hear from you
Regards
Brian

Thanks Brian.

I'm visiting my Dad next week and will runs those names past him. It's a very long time ago now and he remembers his 215 crew well, but not those he flew with on 355 so I'm not too hopeful, but I'll ask.

Kind regards,

Geoff

Hi Brian,

I ran the names past my Dad. Your Dad and Jim Ross did not ring any bells, but he remembers Eddie Gilbert as one of nine Canadians who were in 215's (officer's) mess when he arrived in September / October 1944. I think the Canadians were the largest group after the RAF boys on the squadron. They lost several of their number when the Brodie crew was lost in January 1945.

Do you know that Jim Ross gets a short mention and Eddie Gilbert several, in 'A Trepid Aviator'? The book's not indexed but in a quick browse through I found some references to them.

Kind regards,

Geoff

Thanks Geoff, I have the book, it is a good read.
Jim Ross went home after one Liberator mission in Jan 45.
Thanks for asking your dad,
Regards
Brian
