Durban, South Africa

Durban, our first camp on dry land, following a six week sea journey in convoy down the Atlantic and round the Cape of Good Hope! The photos at Durban were taken after our six week sea journey in the hold of a cargo boat (the SS Volendam). We disembarked at Durban welcomed by the famous ""woman in white"" singing ""Land of hope & glory"" on the dockside. We were stationed under canvas at the transit camp, where the pictures were taken, before going on by train to the Air Navigation School at East London.

This Photo was taken just after we got our wings in South Africa. The picture was taken In Durban when we were on leave. I don't remember the chap on my near left but the lad on the far left was Sheddon by name. After the war and I was flying out of Nairobi Sheddon visited our airfield to refuel flying a Baltimore bomber. I scrounged a ride with him. Photo & Text Courtesy Of Matt Kennedy.
