I have a copy of the bombing photo for the Gemona raid on 7/3/45, my father is the W/op Sgt Whitehead. I also have bombing photos from Verona 27/2/45, and several others from F/S Fabers crew and I can confirm they were still together and active up to and beyond the end of hostilities.
Just a quick question , was your father with 40sq in wellingtons and then went on to liberators ?.The reason i ask this is because i can only find your dads crew once on the 40 SQ op records. The date u mention 27/2/45 does not list Fabers crew at all. Can you help me out with this .
That's right. They were initially on wellingtons and then converted to Liberators. Later they converted to Lancasters. I believe that they were first in 104 Squadron and then 40 Squadron, although my father said that these two squadrons operated very closely together anyway. The other bombing photos I have are Graz M/Y 13/2/45, Malalbergo 19/4/45 and B.V. Crnomelj 2/2/45, although this was actually a supply drop to partisans.
Thats why the crew only showed up once on 40 sq records. 104 squadron joined 40 sq at 236 wings new base in abu sueir to convert from libs to lancasters. And your right 104 40 and 70 sqs were on a lot of raids together.
thanks for the info Steve , it makes a bit more sense now .My dad went on to lancasters at abu sueir as well, i wonder if they ever knew one another ?
